Autumn Leaves and Pumpkin Soup
It feels somewhat bizarre writing an Autumn blog on the hottest September day since 1911. It is 26 degrees celsius here on the farm and the sun is beating down on the lavender and the swallows don’t know if they’re heading south for the winter or staying another week.
This week we had the pleasure of bumping into Scott Davis from Strawberry Shortcake who is pondering the seasonal changes as Autumn approaches. The Towy is still warm so sea bass is very much still in season as are trout and salmon, but within the next month they’ll start to thin out, replaced with clams, mussels and wild game.
Obviously, the start of Autumn means the return of fresh, earthier British root vegetables and I suspect with three young children, there will be a surplus of pumpkin for pumpkin soup in the Davis household come Halloween. Down at the wildfowl and wetlands centre in Llanelli there’s plenty going on with guided activities for toddlers, veggie patch lessons, follow the feeders and Lego animals to marvel at and for grown-ups, there are painting days with Jan Bligh.
With the festive season fast approaching, craft and Christmas fairs will be appearing in Llanelli, Carmarthen and Llandeilo and for foodies, the Myddfai Country Farmers Market is well worth a visit.
Finally, for those who like a flutter, Ffos Las is hosting it’s annual Countryside race day in association with The Countryside Alliance, a 7 jump race fixture, together with an amateur charity race. A great event aimed at raising awareness of their work with wildlife and the protection of rural life.
